When bed manufacturer Scapa needed to improve the work environment and efficiency of its production, they chose a customized lifting solution from Lifts All. With ergonomic tools and an optimized rail system, the company has created a sustainable work environment that saves both time and bodies - and received support all the way, from needs analysis to post-control.
At Scapa in Alvesta, around 60 people work with everything from sales to production of different types of beds. Sustainability is a fundamental part of the company's philosophy - both in terms of people, products and manufacturing.
When Scapa discovered that the existing manual lifts of electric beds were neither ergonomic nor efficient, they began to look for a comprehensive solution that could improve both the working environment and the production rate. After contacting Lifts All, Scapa chose a customized lifting solution adapted to the needs of the business.
A new way to lift
Andreas Knobloch, Production Manager at Scapa, says that in the past, employees always needed the help of a colleague to lift a bed, which created interruptions and unnecessary strain.
"We needed to find a way to streamline, while providing a decent working environment for our employees. Lifting and rotating these parts that weigh 30-50 kilograms each - it was neither sustainable in the long run nor very efficient," says Andreas. He explains that they wanted to find a way to make the line more efficient for the employees working there, avoiding "lots of running and stopping times".
After meeting Lifts All at a trade fair, the idea of using a lifting tool was born. Then one of Lifts All's technical advisors, Robin, visited Scapa in Alvesta to see the needs on site.
"Robin visited us in Alvesta, saw what was needed and for what, came up with ideas and was a good sounding board," says Andreas. "We are very novice when it comes to lifting tools. We all felt that he knew what he was talking about and came up with suggestions on what a solution could look like to make it work well for us."
The lifting solution - tailored to your business
The result was a Vacuum Gripper and a Mechanical Gripper, both designed to make the bed frames virtually weightless. The tools have similar controls, making them easy to learn and operate. Nowadays, only one person is needed to lift the beds.
The lifting tools are mounted in a rail system that optimizes the entire workspace, allowing staff to move freely with the tools and utilize the entire area.
"We have both cut time and above all saved on bodies. There will be no bad, stupid, heavy lifting, but it will be a sustainable work environment - definitely," says Andreas.
He says that, as with anything new, there was some resistance at first, but the tools are now used every day.
"It's very user-friendly, for such a big rig by our standards. The lifting tools are very easy to control, smooth and easy to use," he says.
A lift from first contact to aftercare
Andreas says he would be happy to recommend Lifts All to other companies.
"Absolutely! Jan, who was here and installed it, was a very nice guy. Then there's the contact, support and tips along the way that have been very rewarding for us who have no knowledge of lifting tools. We could have been taken for a ride if we hadn't had contact with someone who looks at what's best for the customer rather than their own," he says.
One thing Andreas particularly appreciates is how Lifts All has followed up even after installation. He explains:
"It's the whole thing with follow-ups and checking that everything is satisfactory. The deal doesn't end when the invoice has gone out, but you check and follow up that everything is working as we had hoped. I value that, that people care about your work."
